Key to Hearing is an independent hearing aid provider, so we can offer you a wide range of styles – from discreet in-the-ear fittings, traditional behind-the-ear designs to the latest rechargeable hearing aid models. If your hearing range would benefit from a hearing device, we’ll take a number of factors into account before suggesting a suitable solution. These include your level of hearing loss, the size and shape of your ear canal and even factors such as dexterity. We’ll also consider your cosmetic preferences, lifestyle and budget.
Styles of hearing aid
Behind the ear (BTE)
This type of hearing aid rests behind the ear with a clear tube attached to the top and with a soft dome or small acrylic tip attached to the base of the tube. The dome/acrylic tip sits in the ear canal.
Receiver in the Canal Technology (RIC)
This rests behind the ear. Most of the components are situated behind the ear, but the receiver (speaker) sits in the ear canal. Instead of a tube, a very thin wire is attached to the top of the hearing aid leading to the receiver unit that sits in the ear canal. The receiver unit has a soft dome or acrylic tip to keep it in place in the ear canal.
Invisible in the Canal (IIC)
This sits deep in the canal and is invisible to the naked eye. All the components are situated within the hearing aid shell. A clear extraction cord is attached to the hearing aid to make it simple to remove it from the ear canal.
Completely in the Canal (CIC)
This sits completely in the ear canal, with only a very small portion of the device being visible from a side profile. All the components are situated within the hearing aid shell. A short clear extraction cord is attached to the hearing aid to make it simple to remove it from the ear canal.
In the Canal (ITC)
This sits within the ear canal and partly in the bowl of the ear. ITC styles are larger than CIC styles, which makes them easier for some people to manage. All the components are situated within the hearing aid shell.
Full Shell / Half Shell / In the Ear (ITE)
As the name suggests, this hearing aid fills the whole bowl of the outer ear. All the components are situated within the hearing aid shell. ITE hearing aids are larger than any of the other in the ear hearing aid styles, so some people may find them easier to manage.
